OLIO is a hybrid of a marketplace and a community app, that alerts neighbours of unwanted food in their area, connecting like-minded individuals wanting to fight food waste, and in turn the climate crisis. That’s because a landmass larger than China is used to grow food that’s never eaten, and so it’s not only the food that’s wasted but also all the resources that go into producing that food are also wasted. OLIO was founded by Tessa Clarke and Saasha Celestial-One, who met during their MBAs at Stanford Business School and felt inspired by their first-hand experience of food waste. And so – much to their frustration as we still had a lot to pack up – I got my new-born baby and toddler dressed and set off armed with this food to find someone to give it to.
